Traditional paths rely on technology and funding, often making the public feel distant

Emphasize the increase in participation rate rather than emission reduction data, as behavior change is the lasting driving force

It took two years to transform the 430000 square meter urban park garbage dumping area into a low-carbon and circular model, and also formed a replicable 'Chengyang Model'. At a national case exchange and learning activity on the theme of green space, 'Beautiful China, I am an Actor - Green Space User Action', Xu Jin, director of the Community Environmental Service Center in Chengyang District, Qingdao, showcased the practical results of the 'Revitalizing Park Green Space and Promoting Low Carbon Recycling Practice' project.

As the largest botanical garden in Chengyang District, Qingdao, Chengyang Olympic Sculpture Culture Park is not only the city's favorite green lung for the people, but also a concentrated source of garden waste. Previously, garden waste was disposed of through external transportation, which was both costly and environmentally unfriendly. Xu Jin introduced that, combined with the traditional cultural concept of "fallen leaves returning to their roots", the team has transformed the garbage dumping area into a composting base, equipped with 28 cylindrical ecological composting baskets with a capacity of 60 cubic meters. Under the guidance of professors from China Agricultural University, greening workers spread dry garden waste such as fallen leaves and branches, and high moisture and perishable kitchen waste such as vegetable roots and leaves in a certain proportion, achieving on-site composting.

The cost is very low, with composting baskets costing less than 100 yuan per square meter. The method is simple and easy to operate. On this basis, we can improve the quality and efficiency of our operations by empowering garden managers to embed them into the daily waste management system, which can be sustainable. "Xu Jin said that by changing the way garden waste is disposed of, the waste has become a green asset. 50% of the black gold soil produced by composting is used to build ecological gardens, and 50% is used as" old compost "to support surrounding schools and communities in composting. The green, low-carbon, and low-cost composting method has been promoted in over 50 schools and communities in the local area. At the same time, it has become a "demonstration education base for low-carbon recycling of garbage classification", achieving public participation in low-carbon recycling education for composting.

This is just one example of the 'Green Space User Action'. Without massive investment or high-tech hardware buildup, what is presented here is a simpler but more sustainable logic of change: activating the low-carbon potential of existing space through small changes in daily behavior.

Green space, also known as open space, refers to any open land that is open to the public, including parks, community gardens, public green spaces, school playgrounds, amusement parks, public rest areas, squares, vacant areas, etc. It can beautify and improve the quality of the environment, providing residents with places for rest and entertainment. From the perspective of landscape composition, green space broadly refers to any vegetation that appears in the urban environment, including developed specific places such as streets, squares, and parks with green vegetation, as well as green low-carbon facilities and innovative technology applications in communities, streets, commercial buildings, shopping malls, and industrial parks.

The event is jointly initiated by the Propaganda and Education Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Wanwu Cloud Space Technology Service Co., Ltd., Tsinghua University, Enterprise Carbon Neutrality Action, and the Avenue Climate Change Promotion Center. Since its launch in April 2025, a total of 96 cases have been collected through the national environmental publicity and education system, covering multiple fields such as communities, schools, and enterprises, showcasing the innovative practices of the public in the low-carbon field. These cases all reflect the characteristics of "low cost and high participation", fully demonstrating the creativity of folk wisdom in green practice.

Zhang Jian, Vice Dean of the Institute of Climate Change and Sustainable Development at Tsinghua University, said, "The value of these cases lies in solving the 'participation problem' of low-carbon transformation. Traditional paths rely on technology and funding, which often make the public feel distant. Here, emission reduction has become a small task for everyone." The advantage of these cases lies in "using local resources and space to achieve change through behavioral design, which provides a Chinese solution for the world.

Representative of the event organizer and Chairman of Wanwu Cloud, Zhu Baoquan

Low carbon is not a one-man show of technology, but a performance art that involves the participation of the whole nation. When sharing the exploration process of the company's transformation from property management to space services, Zhu Baoquan, Chairman of Wanwu Cloud, said, "We used to believe that low-carbon transformation required a large investment, but practice has taught us that real change begins with human behavior. In Shenzhen, we optimized building energy consumption through algorithms and trained employees on energy-saving habits, resulting in some projects using less than 8% of the city's average electricity consumption, without relying on new equipment. The core of green space is to 'make good use of existing resources', which is a soft upgrade and highly compatible with the concept of' making the best use of things' in folk wisdom

Yin Yan, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Environmental Protection Community in Beihu Street, Jianghan District, Wuhan, is more willing to emphasize the "increase in participation rate" rather than emission reduction data, because behavior change is the lasting driving force. The community stimulates residents' enthusiasm for participation through convenient facilities such as photovoltaic seats and smart garbage bins. Yin Yan said, "We didn't use large-scale demolition and construction, but gradually updated the facilities. Photovoltaic seats can be charged and shaded, and residents are willing to use them; smart garbage can points can be exchanged for gifts, and everyone actively sorts them. These small things come together, making environmental protection a habit." The Beihu Street Environmental Protection Community processes over 100 tons of garbage annually, which also shows that there is great potential for the community's green transformation.

Reproducibility is a common feature among many cases. The "carbon credit" system launched by Liaoning Carbon Emission Trading Center at Shenyang Institute of Technology links low-carbon behavior with academic evaluation. Students accumulate carbon credits through daily actions such as green travel and garbage classification, and gain more choices in educational resources through carbon credits. This design cleverly integrates environmental awareness into the education system, allowing students to shift from passive acceptance to active participation. Project leader Wu Fan introduced, "We not only need to calculate how many tons of carbon have been saved, but also cultivate a generation's ecological literacy. Students accumulate an average of 200-300 points per month, which is the cultivation of behavioral habits." This model does not require additional investment and achieves a win-win situation between education and environmental benefits through institutional design alone, which can be promoted to more colleges and universities.

Not relying on capital intensive equipment renovation, cultivating future citizens with ecological awareness through spatial activation and educational innovation. Kidswant Children's Products Co., Ltd. has launched the "One Meter High View of the World" project, which uses environmentally friendly corrugated paper to construct biodiversity exhibition areas in 1300 stores across the country, showcasing knowledge of endangered species and training "little tour guides" to lead visitors. Wang Xingyuan, the Director of Omnichannel Membership, said, "We did not build new venues, but used existing spaces to attract parent-child families through creative design. Children learn environmental knowledge through interaction, while parents spread their influence through community sharing. This influence cannot be measured by emissions reduction, but the green seeds it plants may change the future." By transforming commercial spaces into educational platforms in a low-cost way, we have achieved the integration of brand value and social responsibility.

Jiang Qing, the Environmental Art Director of Zhongshan Diyin Public School, showcased the ecological education project jointly developed by the school and Shenzhen Xianhu Botanical Garden. The school utilizes 2300 square meters of idle space to create ten themed botanical gardens, introducing rare species such as ferns and ferns, allowing students to get close to nature through activities such as plant adoption and fossil printing. Jiang Qing emphasized, "We did not engage in large-scale construction, but instead collaborated with research institutions to transform academic resources into teaching content. Students transformed from listeners to narrators, and the improvement rate of ecological literacy exceeded 90%. This change was not achieved through funding, but through curriculum design and teacher-student participation

He Chaoxin, Chief Youth Officer of the World University Climate Change Alliance

Young people are catalysts for behavior change. Students become environmental guides, and young people design carbon scoring apps, making low-carbon interesting. Wisdom comes from the people, especially from the creativity of the younger generation. ”The Chief Youth Officer of the World University Climate Change Alliance, He Chaoxin, emphasized the importance of youth roles. She shared, "During my visit to Shenzhen, I saw students making art installations using waste plastic, which is more touching than any advertisement. The art of behavior change lies in making environmental protection an aesthetic of life

We are continuously optimizing the online display platform of the "Green Space User Yearbook" to make these excellent practices accessible, learnable, and replicable, "said Wang Weiwei, Director of the Green Space User Action Committee and General Manager of the Wanwu Cloud Sustainable Development Center. We are actively preparing to release the" 2025 Beautiful China · Green Space User Typical Case Collection "and" Green Space User Yearbook "during COP30, telling the international community the user stories of China's low-carbon transformation and showcasing China's innovation and responsibility in the field of green space. Wang Weiwei emphasized that the goal of action is not to pursue data indicators, but to build a shared learning ecosystem.
