Porsche has launched an electric vehicle battery recycling pilot project dedicated to recovering valuable raw materials from decommissioned high-voltage batteries and exploring the feasibility of closed-loop material recycling. Through this initiative, Porsche aims to address the increasingly prominent issue of battery raw material recycling and promote the environmentally friendly processing of high-voltage batteries. In the long term, Porsche also plans to work with partners to build a high-voltage battery recycling network.

Barbara Frenkel, Member of the Executive Board for Procurement at Porsche AG, stated: "Through innovative recycling processes, we hope to reduce Porsche's dependence on volatile raw material markets. The circular economy is one of the core pillars of Porsche's sustainability strategy, and this pilot project fully demonstrates our commitment to environmental protection."

Step by Step Toward a Circular Economy

To test processes suitable for large-scale application, the pilot project is divided into three phases. In the first phase, decommissioned high-voltage batteries from R&D vehicles are mechanically shredded and processed into a granular mixture containing valuable recyclable raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, and lithium — known as "black mass." To date, approximately 65 tons of black mass have been produced.

In the second phase, the black mass will be further refined to separate out the key raw materials needed for producing high-voltage batteries. To ensure the high quality of power batteries, the quality and purity of the recycled materials are particularly important to Porsche.

In the third pilot phase, Porsche plans to use a certain proportion of recycled materials to produce high-voltage batteries and test their potential applications in Porsche vehicles. This pilot project demonstrates Porsche's understanding of the circular economy: recovering valuable raw materials from decommissioned high-voltage batteries, processing them, and reusing them in the manufacture of new products. This approach both extends the useful life of specific resources and further reduces the environmental impact of battery production.

Porsche Committed to Being an Innovation Driver

Through this approach, Porsche strives to play a key role in building a closed-loop battery raw material recycling system and further demonstrate its environmental commitment to resource utilization. This plan is also Porsche's preparation for upcoming regulatory changes, including the new EU Battery Regulation set to take effect in 2031. Through forward-looking deployment of recycled resource utilization, Porsche expects to reduce its environmental footprint while making a positive contribution to the sustainable development of the industry.
