Project Overview
Located at DONGPENG’s former Sanitary Ware Plant No. 2 in Chancheng District, Foshan, T2M was created to address two interconnected challenges. After the original production function was phased out, the factory faced underuse, the potential loss of industrial memory, and the resource burden associated with demolition and reconstruction. At the same time, concepts such as sustainable materials, circular economy and ESG remained highly technical and difficult for the public to experience in daily life.
In October 2023, DONGPENG launched the renewal of T2M through DP LAB. The name refers to both “The Second Mine”—recovering value from urban and industrial resources—and “The Second Mind”—encouraging a new way of thinking about sustainable living. By retaining the existing industrial structure, reusing original objects, and introducing art, design and material innovation, the project transformed the former factory into an open green co-creation space serving local communities, students, designers, industry partners, government bodies and social organizations.
The project aims to reduce demolition-led redevelopment while establishing an operating model that combines sustainable materials research and exhibition, public climate education, study visits, volunteering and community engagement, enabling users to understand, experience and participate in low-carbon action.
Project Implementation
The project is supported by DONGPENG Holdings. DP LAB leads overall planning, curation, operations and partnership development, while DP Eco Material provides sustainable materials, waste-to-resource technologies and application support. Artists, designers, brands, universities, social organizations and local environmental authorities participate as co-creators.
First, to address underused industrial space and the resource burden associated with demolition-led redevelopment, the project began in October 2023 with a clear principle: retain rather than demolish. Existing industrial structures and spatial memory were preserved, while original objects, reclaimed materials and factory components were incorporated through repair, reuse and measured intervention. Sustainable materials research, art exhibitions, lifestyle experiences, cultural programs and public activities were embedded in the existing building, transforming a former production facility into a platform for urban sustainability and co-creation.
Second, to make technical and abstract sustainability concepts accessible, the project adopted a “readable, touchable and applicable” materials approach. It established a Sustainable Materials Library, Project New Mine, and a Materials Aesthetics Laboratory. The second-season exhibition, MATTER NOW!, launched in August 2025 and brought together more than 30 domestic and international brands, catalogued over 300 sustainable materials, and displayed more than 500 recycled-material samples and waste-conversion outcomes. Waste ceramics, steel slag, fly ash, mining residues and other resource streams were explained through physical samples, films, finished products, installations and educational panels. ESG, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, circular economy and green manufacturing were translated into experiences through which users could move from understanding concepts to touching materials and discussing their own choices.
Third, to avoid one-way corporate communication and encourage meaningful participation, T2M developed a model combining curation, co-creation, education and community engagement. WonderFac opened to the public on April 25, 2025. Working with art institutions and more than 40 artist groups, it generated over 60 works within the existing industrial setting. The project also delivered performances, creative workshops, artist salons, T2M lectures, roundtable discussions, study visits, public classes, swap events and environmental markets. More than 20 schools, universities and public-education organizations have participated, including exchanges with Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong Baptist University and Beijing University of Chemical Technology.
Fourth, to provide an ongoing organizational platform for low-carbon action, T2M worked under the guidance of the Chancheng Branch of the Foshan Municipal Ecology and Environment Bureau and partnered with the Green Walker Low-Carbon Promotion Center to establish Foshan’s first Climate Change Education Volunteer Service Station. Forty-five university student volunteers participated as “low-carbon interpreters,” using climate classes, interactive challenges and other formats to connect industrial transformation with everyday climate action.
Through these measures, the project developed a collaborative model in which the company provides space and professional resources, public authorities offer guidance, social organizations support operations, and universities and the public participate in implementation. The Sustainable Materials Library serves as the project’s core content, while exhibitions, forums, study programs and volunteer services provide recurring formats for engagement.

Project Outcome
The project transformed an underused former factory into a space combining sustainable materials research, public education and urban co-creation. Rather than replacing the site through demolition and new construction, the renewal retained the industrial structure and reused original objects, recycled materials and circular installations in exhibition and public-use settings. T2M has connected more than 30 domestic and international brands, catalogued over 300 sustainable materials, and displayed more than 500 recycled-material samples and waste-conversion outcomes, turning circular-resource technologies into experiences that users can touch, compare and discuss.
Its principal innovation is an integrated model combining adaptive reuse of industrial space, a green materials database, interpretation through art and design, and user participation. During the opening season, more than 40 artist groups created over 60 works. The project also delivered more than 20 performances, over 20 workshops and artist exchanges, more than 10 professional forums, and over 20 local community activities. More than 20 schools, universities and public-education organizations participated in study and learning programs, while 45 university student volunteers joined climate education activities.
T2M was not designed as a one-off exhibition. It has developed an operating framework led by DP LAB, with the Sustainable Materials Library as its core content and thematic exhibitions, learning programs, forums and volunteer services as recurring formats. Its relatively low-intensity renovation approach, modular content system and multi-stakeholder collaboration model can be adapted to former factories, corporate showrooms, research facilities and other enterprise-operated spaces, giving it strong potential for replication.
