Project Overview

With the rapid rise of outdoor activities such as hiking and city walk, public green spaces including city parks, mountain trails, and nature reserves have become important venues for people, particularly younger generations, to connect with nature and engage in outdoor activities. At the same time, the proper collection and recycling of post-consumed plastic bottles and other waste materials, as well as the challenge of translating growing environmental awareness into sustainable everyday actions, have emerged as key initiatives in public spaces management and sustainable lifestyles promotion.

Shenzhen is home to abundant natural resources, including mountains, parks, coastal greenways, and scenic hiking routes. Its unique urban landscape provides an ideal setting for outdoor activities and public participation in ecological protection. Building on these local advantages, and leveraging its long-standing commitment to packaging reduction, circular economic promotion, and consumer advocacy, Mizone launched the “Get Nature Back” Campaign at Wutong Mountain in Shenzhen in 2024, together with 60 outdoor environmental influencers and great number of young consumers. The event marked the official launch of this Environmental Public Welfare Program. The initiative immediately attracted widespread public attention and participation. On the first day of the launch event, participants collected more than 2,300 plastic bottles and removed 70 kg of waste from the mountain environment, demonstrating strong public enthusiasm for combining outdoor activity with environmental protection.

Building on the success of its first year, Mizone expanded both the scale and community reach of the program in 2025. Under the guidance of Shenzhen Municipal Solid Waste Sorting Management Center affiliated with the Urban Administration and Regulation of Shenzhen Municipality, and in partnership with the Waterdrop Environmental Protection Center, Mizone launched the 2nd phase of the “Get Nature Back” Program. 14 smart recycling machines were installed along hiking routes across Shenzhen’s 10 scenic destinations. Hikers can deposit used plastic bottles of any brand into the machines and earn carbon points, which can be redeemed for hiking gear made from recycled PET (rPET) materials. Through the application of intelligent technology, the program supports greener outdoor lifestyles while establishing a closed-loop system of “collecting, recycling, and regeneration.”

Bringing smart recycling machines outdoors represents an innovative exploration by Mizone. With strong support from local government departments, the “Get Nature Back” program successfully combines outdoor activities with environmental stewardship, encouraging participants to contribute to the development of a “Zero-Waste City” and a “Beautiful Shenzhen”, while advancing the broader vision of building a “Beautiful China”.

Project Implementation

1. Preparation Phase (January–June 2025)

With the support and guidance of Shenzhen Municipal Solid Waste Sorting Management Center and Shenzhen Park Management Center, comprehensive field assessments were conducted across Shenzhen’s major parks and hiking destinations. Based on visitor traffic, geographic location, accessibility, and site infrastructure, 10 flagship hiking destinations and their associated routes were selected as project implementation sites, including Nanshan Mountain, Tanglang Mountain, Yangtai Mountain, Wutong Mountain, Bijia Mountain, Yinhu Mountain, Central Park, Lizhi Park, and Shenzhen Bay Mangrove Coastal Ecological Park. Through close collaboration between government authorities and private sector, site selection, route planning, and feasibility assessments were successfully completed, laying a solid foundation for the implementation of the program.

Danone Beverages China partnered with Shenzhen Classification (“Shenfenlei”), the project’s operation partner, to design, manufacture, and deploy of smart recycling machines tailored to the characteristics of outdoor destinations and visitor needs. Equipped with intelligent bottle recognition, connected monitoring, and incentive-based reward functions, the machines enable efficient data management and provide a robust technological platform for digital operations, public engagement, and behavior-change initiatives.

2. Launch Ceremony and Public Advocacy (June 2025)

On World Environment Day, June 5, 2025, the phase 2 of the “Get Nature Back” campaign was officially launched at Shenzhen’s Bijia Mountain Park. The event brought together government officials, environmental experts, media representatives and outdoor influencers, to jointly promote the initiative. A donation ceremony of smart recycling machines was also held, marking the official start of the project’s next phase of larger scale deployment.

3. Ongoing Project Operations (June 2025–Present)

14 smart recycling machines were deployed along 10 hiking routes across Shenzhen hiking destinations, creating a connected recycling network with real-time monitoring capabilities. The project team continuously tracks the machine performance, and analyzes the data of recycling volumes, carbon-point redemption activities, and public participation to optimize project operations and improve user experience.

To sustain public interest and participation, themed clean-up hikes are regularly organized, leverage key occasions such as World Environment Day and popular urban hiking events. These activities are further amplified through online and offline communications that raise environmental awareness and encourage low-carbon lifestyles.

Danone partnered with Southern Weekly, a leading media outlet in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and Chen Beier, recipient of the “Touching China 2021 Person of the Year” award, to produce a public service documentary “The Road to Zero Waste”. The documentary showcases the project’s implementation journey, highlights stories of community participation, and illustrates the value of plastic bottle recycling and regeneration. Through distribution across digital platforms, social media channels, and partner media networks, the documentary has significantly expanded the initiative’s visibility, strengthened public awareness of circular economy practices, and further amplified its social impact.

4. Achievement Showcase (December 2025)

In December 2025, the project introduced the innovative “Recycled Bottle Rest Station” at Bijia Mountain Park, transforming recycled plastic materials collected through the program into public facilities for visitors. By giving a 2nd life to recovered plastic bottles, the project addresses a common challenge in recycling: limited public visibility of the value of waste sorting and recycle. The Rest Station provides a tangible demonstration of the full circular value chain, strengthening public understanding of the environmental and social benefits of recycling.
